We hosted our second edition of Making it BiG in Entrepreneurship, here Tonte Bo Douglas shares his review of what happened when entrepreneurs connected with inspirational business leaders.
On Wednesday 12th August, Making It Big hosted “Making It Big In Entrepreneurship & Summer Networking Event”. This was done after the huge success of the April event at Central Working in Whitechapel. The summer edition delivered as much as any of the events ran before, loaded with seven guest speakers and more interaction. The goal once again was to bring Entrepreneurs into one room to hear a series of practical talks, activities, games and meet like-minded people to be inspired. It was clear this objective was reached as after the event I spoke to many people who said they definitely left feeling inspired.
As people arrived at the venue they began to talk and network prior to the event which is always great to see because it adds to the atmosphere and buzz which carried on long into the event as well. Even as the speakers and hosts began to come in they were conversing with people in attendance and you could see that people were in amazing spirits as the event was about to start.
This event was hosted by the entertaining BET International Presenter Amina Habeeb who kept the vibe of the entire night light hearted, fun and enjoyable as we transitioned from speaker to speaker and activity to activity. She filled in parts of the event with insight, jokes and commentary which the audience very much appreciated.
The event started with a light networking game where we had to converse with each other about our lives and what we hoped to get out of the event. Even in this introductory game it was clear to see that many people were already beginning to connect and get to know more about each other.
The first speaker of the event was James Shillcock, Founder of Vivid Drinks and he told his incredible story of starting this drinks company and battling through depression, trademark issues and lack of finances to creating Vivid which is now being stocked in stores like Waitrose across the UK. One of the most interesting stories he told was being in a coffee shop one day and in passing, a stranger heard James talking about Vivid and connected him to potential investors which was the first step getting his product off the ground. What many took away from his talk is the importance of speaking things and putting energy into existence and knowing your Unique Selling Point.
James’ talk transitioned seamlessly into one from Indy Agnihotri an Accountant from event sponsors ICAEW – (Institute Of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales). One of the members talked about the importance of business planning, knowing your numbers, where the money is coming from and other necessary things to know when constructing a business plan for potential investors, which was very important to hear just as much as the creative aspects were.
After the break and more exciting networking games, we had a talk from Jesse Konadu who spoke about her blog and how and why she started it and that was a great reminder for people to know that even if they don’t have a business idea right now, everyone can start a blog and write and log their thoughts about what they feel passionate about.
At this point, the audience had already got their money’s worth of value at the event…but there was much more to come. We had the Dream Makers Panel which featured Barbara Bayayi – Director of Afmena Events, Joel Balkwill – Founder of Spiral, Reuben Christian – Presenter, Comic and Co-creator of Individualism, Manny Boateng of Young Pro Mag and Pilar Nalwimba – Founder Of My Social Media PA. Much of this panel was then sharing their amazing stories of what they had to overcome to start their enterprises and why they started. They all had something in common, which was purpose, they all had something they were trying to achieve and starting making it happen, which we all have it in us to do in our own lives.
As if that wasn’t enough, to close the event we had a talk from Life Strategist, Warren Ryan who gave an amazing speech about his journey in life and what we can achieve in our lives if we refocus our minds, know our ‘why’ and our purposes and we have 100% belief in ourselves, which was an amazing way to wrap up what everyone had been talking about through.
By the end of the evening everyone left the event with more ideas, energy, motivation and belief than before they came. The main theme throughout the event was ‘momentum’. Keep building, keep working, keep making moves and you achieve your goals sooner rather than later. Regarding the event, momentum was certainly in the air as people continued networking after the event because they enjoyed it so much. If you asked everyone who attended the event, I’m confident they all have new and bigger perceptions of what “Making It Big” is all about.
